When Kavita Devi from Haryana entered the WWE ring in her Salwar Kameez and broke all stereotypes attached to women in India, she became the first Indian female wrestler to be a part of WWE.

Prior to her, Tiger Jeet Singh, The Great Khali, and the reigning champion, Jinder Mahal have represented India in WWE, but there had been no Indian female wrestler. Kavita Devi, a former champion powerlifter trained under The Great Khali at his academy in Punjab before making her WWE debut in the inaugural Mae Young Classic women’s tournament last month.

She is an inspiration for every Indian women and her journey from a rural village of Haryana to the ring of WWE is nothing short of exemplary.

1- Kavita Devi hails from Malvi (Julana), a small village in Jind district of Haryana

Kavita was born into a male dominated rural village of Haryana, where girls faced massive discrimination and were prevented from playing sports. Elders of her village often urged her father to get her married. But Kavita found support in her brother who stood behind her like a rock and never allowed any social prejudice to hamper her progress.

2- Kavita Devi is an ex-Armed Border Forces Sub Inspector

Kavita Devi joined the Indian armed Forces(Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)) as a constable through sports quota. The personnel of SSB typically serves at the Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan border and even Kavita was a posted constable with the SSB. She retired as a sub-inspector.

3- Unnerving passion for sports

Kavita Devi quit her position as a Sub Inspector at SSB in 2010 to focus on her sports career. She was often denied permission by the Government to participate in games while she was with SSB.

Sports has always been the pinnacle of Kavita’s life and she has been a national-level champion in Weightlifting, Wushu as well as Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). But the turning point of her sports career came in 2016 when she bagged Gold at the 2016 South Asian Games in the 75 Kg category. She completely defeated her opponent by 50 points, highest by any female wrestler in the tournament.

4- She Has been trained by The Great Khali

Kavita Devi trained at the famous Continental Wrestling Entertainment (CWE) Academy, which is owned and operated by former WWE World Heavyweight Champion, The Great Khali, in Jalandhar, Punjab, India.

Kavita Devi credits The Great Khali for making her proficient and providing the fellow academy members with the best possible training facilities.

She gained fame during her time at the academy when she showed up in a traditional Salwar kameez dress and defeated another Indian wrestler BB Bulbul.

5- Kavita Devi is married and has a 5 Year old Son

Kavita Devi is married to Volleyball player Gaurav Tomar, who is also posted with SSB. Kavita credits Gaurav for being her pillar of strength, as he sacrificed his own sporting career to promote Kavita.

The couple is also proud parents to 5 year old Abhijeet who was born in 2012. Kavita says that her son is the source of her inspiration and that he motivates her to continue training.
